About Us

The NT Lived Experience Network is a growing movement of Territorians using their lived experience of mental health challenges, trauma, suicidality, or issues with alcohol, drugs or gambling to create positive change.

By becoming a member, you’ll be helping us build a stronger voice for lived experience advocacy across the Northern Territory. Together, we can influence government decision-making, improve services, and support better outcomes for people across the NT – now and into the future.

Formation Meeting SM

We want you to be involved

We have reached milestone in our journey, and on the 13th of December 2025 will host our Formation Meeting as the final step to becoming a fully incorporated Not-For-Profit organisation in the Northern Territory.  Our Formation Meeting is an important opportunity for all of our members to come together, to agree on our Constitution, and to form our First Board.

We invite all Territorians with lived experience to join as members and get involved.  To help you understand more about our Network, an overview of our purpose and our proposed governance model—drawn from our draft Constitution—is provided below. All members will receive a copy of the draft Constitution and an invitation to to self-nominate for our First Board before our Formation Meeting on the 13th of December.  Once our Constitution and First Board are finalized we will share that information through our website.

Our Purpose

The NT Lived Experience Network exists to reduce the distress, disadvantage and discrimination faced by people living with mental health challenges, trauma, suicidality, or issues related to alcohol, drugs or gambling. We do this by promoting people’s rights, supporting recovery and self-determination, and ensuring lived experience voices are heard in the decisions that affect them. We help people build confidence, skills and connections, support families and kin, and strengthen the peer workforce across the NT. We strive to ensure that lived experience knowledge and perspectives meaningfully inform how services operate and how system-level decisions are made, and that people with greater barriers or less visibility have an equitable voice. Our goal is to help create a service system that is safe, respectful, culturally appropriate, equitable, and guided by what people say they need. In all of this, we aim to be a responsible, sustainable and community-led organisation that stays focused on what matters most to the people we represent.

Our Proposed Governance Model

The NT Lived Experience Network’s proposed governance model is built on equity, strong First Nations leadership, and broad lived experience representation across the Northern Territory. At least 30% of Committee members will be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, ensuring First Nations knowledge, lived experience and decision-making are centred in the organisation’s governance. The Committee also seeks to reflect the diverse and intersectional experiences that shape people’s access to care and the barriers they face—including LGBTIQA+ people; those with chronic illness or disability; people with experiences of incarceration, homelessness or inpatient facilities; multicultural communities; young people; older people; and those supporting family and kin. To support equitable decision-making across the NT, the model also aims for representation from each of the six health regions, with at least two Committee members from Greater Darwin, Rural and Remote (Top End), Central, Barkly, Big Rivers and East Arnhem.
